The Wedge is a regular online publication about the business, money and magic of golf.
\nIt's a useful, entertaining outside-in view of how the fascinating future of golf is being crafted and moulded.
\nCheck out The Wedge today (but only after you've finished reading this newsletter first 😁)
\nLet's face it - metrics dominate our work lives.
\nPerformance indicators. Targets. Team stats. ROI.
\nThey fill our screens and reports fill our inboxes.
\nBut after looking closely at performers for 20 years, I've discovered something crucial: The most successful leaders know exactly when to ignore these metrics.
\nAn example from the world of business; Karen is a tech CEO I recently worked with. Her company's growth metrics were all in the right direction, but she had a sense that trouble may be brewing.
\nHer top performers showed subtle signs of burnout.
\nAll data suggested everything was fine. Her leadership instinct said otherwise. And against board pressure, she scaled back stretch growth targets a little and created some breathing room.
\nThe result? Within a few months, innovation exploded. Creativity re-emerged. The go-to metrics & data had missed the creative exhaustion - but her leadership radar captured it just in time.
\nHere's what sets top leaders apart: They understand that metrics only measure past performance. True leadership focuses on the now that informs and supports future success.
\nYou see it with some legendary coaches. Nick Saban didn't just track completion percentages - he studies quarterback movement patterns in practice. Geno Auriemma didn't fixate on point totals - he observed team dynamics during games & timeouts. (a clip really worth watching btw.)
\nWhat are these high-performing leaders tuning into? I see that as they tune into, leverage and lean into their tacit knowledge that three critical patterns emerge:
\nNow, this isn't about rejecting data. It's about seeing what lies beyond it - a bit like what we spoke about in our recent 'Sherlock Holmes' newsletter.
\nSo, how can you start to develop and nurture this skill today?
\nThat manager we met at the top of the piece left me with this wisdom: \"Metrics tell you some topline details behind the win or loss....they give you a lot of ‘what’ detail. And that’s great…we need that. But spotting what drives future wins lies in understanding the ‘how’ behind the what.\"
\nSo, in your world, what warning signs might your metrics be missing right now?
\nNext time we’ll take a look at how good leaders and their people build strategies & systems to catch what numbers & data might be missing.
\nBut in the meantime, give this a go: In your next leadership or management meeting, tune into and notice what your usual metrics aren't measuring.
\nLast thing, I’d really appreciate it if you would share this with other friends of colleagues who might benefit or be interested. There’s a time when we all get too focused on metrics that aren’t absolute or keeping us directionally correct.

April 4, 2025 Hi Reader You've read the books. Attended the courses. Maybe did a post-grad. You follow the experts. Do site visits. Yet something's missing. The gap between average, good and great leaders often isn't found in what everyone talks about. It hides in the wide open – in principles so fundamental they're nearly invisible. I've spent years studying sports leaders who consistently outperform their peers. The difference, largely, isn't talent or resources. It's their unconscious...
March 28, 2025 Hi Reader I think we've all seen it happen. You might well have felt (of feel?) it yourself. A talented head-coach with a decade of experience still makes the same mistakes they made in year one. A sports director who claims "extensive experience" but shows little growth in actual wisdom. The shocking and sad truth? Many sports leaders don't have ten years of experience. They have one year, repeated ten times. This isn't about intelligence, aptitude or work ethic. It's about...
March 21, 2025 Hi Reader The crowd says play it safe. But the crowd is very often wrong. How often do you see leaders & their teams make decisions their rivals call "career suicide" or even "competitive malpractice."? Those same rivals quite quickly then quietly model those exact approaches. This isn't about being different for show. It's about having the courage to see what others miss. Because here's the truth most won't admit: In sports leadership, following best practices guarantees...
